Earlier today, the trucks of the Anti-Encroachment Committee came and knocked down the outdoor seating area of slider station without previously warning the owners. According to one of the owners, the committee representative wanted to demolish the entire outdoor seating area- including the chairs and tables, but one of slider station’s staff managed to move the chairs & tables before the process of demolition had begun.
As you can see above, the outdoor seating area is now smaller than before.

This picture is after new plats have been added earlier in the day to temporarily fix the ugly scene. You can view the destruction at http://www.248am.com/mark/kuwait/green-is-bad/

I think that if we have a law we must respect it and do not include any emotions in our judgement. I really like slider station, but since the law says that there are some violations, these violations should be removed. If anything is wrong with the law it should be changed instead of blaming the committee for doing their job.

i think the baledeya should use some common sense. its not like we have a lot of green in kuwait. its quite despicable that they are hell bent on destroying the things that harm no one.
I would understand if its on the street and blocking vision for cars or something, but its not, and this is just plain stupid.

KAM: What if I told you there is no law ? If there is is, no one has seen it ! this is purely personal judgment. Our seating area is fully licensed by the baladiya. This leaves the greenery outside which is not blocking anything. They demolished and kept the rubble, was that what the law calls for ?

I praise the baladiya. If it is your house and some one plants tree there saying it makes the place green can you allow it? And here as the picture clearly shows they were encroaching on pedestrian walkway. Kudos to baladiya. Keep up the good work. Guess this is one place in kuwait where wasta do not work.

I hope everyone could differentiate between “green” and “green blocking pedestrians”. In slider stations case, It hink they blocked pedestrian’s pathway, just think of it if Prime ‘n Toast or Burger hub suddenly planted trees on the side curb surrounding their seating are.
What we can do is that instead of green or nothing, we could have had a compromise atleast a 1 meter wide pathway clear of anything, including cars.

People all of you have valid opinions but i dont think any of you are against greenary in kuwait…the seating area of sliders is nice as well personaly i enjoy sitting outside but regarding blocking pathways that is not acceptable… i think m.albader is doing a great job though they tell you first either you take it out your self or we will so sliders should’ve cleared there own mess…I think the best thing is to make people pay the gov. rent for using land that belongs to it i.e Shaleh….

Equilizer: First of all, I asked about what you said, and the information I got is that there is a law for “amlak il Dawla” violations. If nobody have seen the law it does not means that the law do not exist. They must search for it the same way any person can search for “ilahwal ilshakh9iya”, “ilqanoon ilmadani”, etc.
One more thing, if there is no law, do you think that “SOME” of the parliament members, who are best in shouting and threatening everybody with the high voice, would accept what happened to their Duwaniyas tell now??? they just screamed about it for certain period to take an advantage in the next elections for some emotional voters and then they knew that they can’t win this battle, so at last they shut their mouths up.
Moreover, Albaladiya!!!!!!!! We can talk 10 days about AlBaladiya. I am sure that most people agree that the most corrupted place in Kuwait is AlBaladiya where bribery is a cup of tea over there. I do not mean that Slider station used bribery or violated the law to get the needed licenses, so don’t get me wrong on this.
Finally, as for you last sentence, I said do not blame the committee for applying the law. The law should be changed by the parliament members if and only if the law is not the most suitable for such case.
One last thing, I am generalizing everything, no word said here is to harm nor attack Slider Station by any means, it was just an example.

KAM: My sources are from a former undersecretary of finance for “amlak ildawla” not from the internet. It doesn’t exist. By that I mean there is no clear definition of what is considered an encroachment when it comes to greenery. No regulation, no handbook, no guidelines nothing.I am clearly against encroachment, but planting trees in an area where governement officials are indifferent (clearly by the evident garbage all over the city) is no violation. Even if it is a violation, where is the warning letter ? Do you get arrested in western countries without warrants ? Do you get evicted without eviction notices ? The process of serving notices, warnings and warrants is part of the democratic and civilized world. Unless you consider Kuwait to be a police state, I will go no further.
I know you don’t target Slider Station, but this is an issue where the whole country is being affected and that is something that no Kuwaiti should accept.Watch Watan TV tonight for more heart breaking cases.

Equalizer: Internet???? who mentioned that????? If you have your sources i do have my sources and i’m not judging your sources, but I am sure of what I am saying and i don’t appreciate your sarcasm regarding where I got my information. Second of all western countries???? In some western countries people went to jail for 6 or more years without any charges.
One more thing about western countries, I read the following today by Mr. Nobu in November 15th, 2009 at 8:30 pm in another blog on the exact topic, and please read it, it may help you undersand how western countries operate
“As horrible as it may seem, I can see the manucipality’s point. By planting trees that form a de facto green FENCE on public land, you are effectively appropriating that land and denying public access to it. These trees did not grow accidently. If nothing is done, every owner of a resturant is going to use public pathways to form a terrace for his establishment. This is against the civic code of nearlly all cities in the world. If you want to use public land for a private function, you will need a permit. Its done in Switzerland, Germany, UK, and the list goes on.”
Even others implement such laws not just in KUWAIT!!!!
At the end, i think that this blog is to share ideas, information, knowledge, updates, etc. and accepting others opinions.

KAM: Who questioned your sources ? I was clearly pointing to mine. I don’t see where you felt the sarcasm in that. In any case my apologies if you had such feelings.

I think they could could have made an exception, its worth it, especially in the winter. The weather is beautiful, and its more fun eating outdoors!!! Its not a diwaniya where they try to organize “FAR3IYAT” ! Its a civilized, high end diner that adds a bit of spice to our unspiced, unsalted Kuwait!! There is a difference between the two ( between tents and diwaniyas and properly set up landscaping and greenery), and they could have charged him(owner) a fee to use the facility, rather than just remove it all as you would do a junkyard!!! Also, this is use of government land to serve the public.

The sidewalk was completely confiscated by the restaurant I guess you wont learn until an oversized obese kuwaiti kid over eats there till he cannot breathe properly shifts the gear into drive instead of reverse mistakenly with his oversized elephant thigh because the tiny sport’s car he’s driving can barley fit a single arm and thigh from his gigantic hormone imbalanced body and rams a poor under-fed indian pedestrian who was forced to walk on the street since the sidewalk was taken over by the restaurant to put massive benches to carry the weight of the fat ass kid in the first place!

Haha, well put Speek
Honestly the types of people that go to Slider Station won’t get any sympathy from me, and most civilized countries enacted these laws loooooong ago. I lived in the US, many places would have lived to have outdoor seating and were limited to a table or two because of the walkway rules, and trees outside the store were out of the question completely.
If Kuwait was truly “westernized” these plants would have never gone up in the first place.
